Microtheme- A very rough draft
At What Cost?
I hate the cost of college. Whether it’s a public or private university, or a community college, the price is absolutely outrageous. I understand that this level of schooling allows you to specialize in a certain field, but how is spending 40k a year going to “pay off” in the years to come? Higher education is expensive as nards, and there are many causes for this. As the cost of college keeps climbing, it’s challenging to understand the exact reasons why. One justification universities might use, is the cost of living. Rooming in dorms is popular, which can add to the overall funds needed. Another reason might be due to the fact that the education is specified, and helpful in order to get the type of job one aspires for. There are many dangers in regards to the cost. Many cannot attend higher education institutions, or the one they dream of, because of how expensive is. Because college education is expected when entering the job field, those who cannot afford it already 5 steps behind. If higher education institutions, no matter what level (community or university), were able to recognize the absurd payment requirements for attendance, then many more could attend, therefore making for a smarter overall population. If this is acknowledged, people would not become stressed about future debt, nor the idea of finding a proper job, since they will be educated.
Steph,
ReplyDeleteI see potential in your writing , for a rough draft itss pretty good. At first for the visual support for the reader you should divide your writing in paragraphs. I really like your topic, I also think that the prices here in America are ridicolous. Back in Germany studying at every university is for free - they care about your grades and not your purse!
Nico, I can't even imagine! And in Germany, the pensions for university professors are really really good! Let's all move to Germany!
DeleteBut seriously, Nico is right to ask for paragraphs, and I want to ask for more focus. I hear and totally get your frustration re: college costs. But you are really going to town, and so we need to focus. Name the frustation and begin inquiring. How might this work:
I hate the cost of college. The price seems absolutely outrageous. I understand that this level of schooling allows us to specialize in a certain field, but why are the costs so very high?
One reason college costs so much may involve the cost of living [do you see how i took the language away from "justification" which makes it seem like colleges are just making stuff up to be evil? you have to train yourself to use language that is slightly more neutral ... sort of training to come at this calmly]. Dorm costs may contribute to the high rates. Specialized training may also amplify costs. [i'm just compressing here; see it? sometimes fewer words also help temper and focus the writing. everything that comes after these brackets takes us away from the focus. i suggest omitting].
If we could think seriously about the costs of college we might better understand, which may help to temper frustrations, however valid they may be.
Does this help?? :)
The incredible cost of college is a difficult thing for most to bear. However, it is a doable thing. Loans, scholarships, service time in the military, as well as many different employee further education programs make college a reality to almost all middle income people. And the struggle is worth the price tag. I saw one figure that had college educated people making $30000 grand more a year on average than High school diploma holders. IF you work ten years at this pace that's three hundred thousand dollars, well surpassing the costs of college and a steady economic platform for life!
